Is This A First Glimpse At The New Chevrolet Camaro

The Camaro could become a model family in the future – including an SUV as well as another sports car.

While the Ford Mustang will enter its seventh generation next year and Dodge will also launch a new Charger, the future of the third Musketeer in the realm of muscle cars has so far remained a well-kept secret. In fact, many were already speculating about the end of production without a direct successor; after all the current generation Camaro has almost a decade and a half under its belt and so far, no successor has been visible even in the far distance.

Recently, however, rumors surfaced that Chevrolet might actually be working on a new generation of its Camaro sports coupe. And it is not to remain with one model — rather the manufacturer plans to form a whole model family around the muscle car. A first glimpse of the Camaro’s future could now be revealed in a new sketch that GM Design has published on its Instagram account.

The Chevrolet Camaro Transforms From A Muscle Car To A Sports Car

At first glance, the design almost looks like the direct successor to the front-engined Corvette C7, but on closer inspection, we discover double rear headlights — always the distinguishing feature of a Camaro. This theory is also supported by the fact that Chevrolet abandoned the front-engine principle with the eighth generation of the Corvette and has since relied on an even sportier mid-engine layout. As Casey Swanseger’s sketch suggests, the Camaro could actually take advantage of this development and move into a new segment. The muscle car could, therefore actually mutate into a real sports car.

The successful design of this sketch is determined in particular by its classic proportions. The long engine hood virtually starts with the front overhang and stretches far into the vehicle before merging into a short and flat greenhouse, which in turn ends in a short and beefy rear. The silhouette of the sports car is underlined by the strongly shaped wheel arches and large wheels. The two-tone design also adds a certain something. While the body is painted in modern blue metallic, the wheels, roof, and exhaust tailpipes are in contrasting elegant silver. After all, a Camaro is always a true cruiser.

Complete Camaro Model Family Planned

But wait, does this sports car now spell the end for the classic muscle car that fans have adored for decades? Not really. As already mentioned, General Motors is planning an entire model family for the Chevrolet Camaro, consisting of at least three models. In addition to the classic muscle car, the second independent model is likely to be an SUV of its own, which should significantly expand the Camaro’s customer base. The third model in the lineup, however, is likely to return to its roots and be a genuine sports car as mentioned. The sports car is likely to be positioned above the classic Camaro and could win back the customers that the Corvette was unable to convince of its concept change.

The question of the powertrain remains. Previously, the plan was to place the Camaro family on a new electric platform. But the proportions of the design literally cry out for a powerful V-8 that would not have to fear competition from the Corvette, even at home.
